Default 1997 BMW 328i help?

I have a automatic 1997 BMW 328i and I want to know what the A and M stand for next to the shifter? And how does it work?

A = automatic

M = Manual

Auto or manual.

Shift over to M and you can move through the gears incrementaly like a clutchess manual transmission. In A it is a normal automatic.
