question about my 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport?

Yesterday i was driving to my sons dads house about 2 hours away. I got there... the van was doing fine...... then on my way home it started making a clincing noise.... I was told that it was the rod. Does anyone know how much this will cost to fix it, or if it can even be fixed? My mechanic said that i will have to replace the whole engine.... but I want a few opinions. thanks
