Default The speedometer and odometer on our 1998 Dodge 1500 is not working - what...

...needs to be replaced to fix this? Also, the 'brake' and 'abs' light stays on even though the brakes are fine. It's 3.9 V6 overdrive automatic. Help!

check the driven gear first, then the speed sensor then the speedo head. these can all be checked at the same spot by removing the gear and turing the shaft with a cordless drill.

the correct sensor to replace is the one on top of the rear differential. not the instrument cluster, not on the trans. if you have 4 wheel abs the part number is 5016133aa, $49.85, rear wheel abs p/n 5014787aa, its $40.60, and both should be in stock or available within a day or two at your dealer. use alot of penetrating oil when you remove it, and twist it to break the rust loose when you remove it. it is plastic and they will break off inside the diff housing.

Replace the speedo sensor on the trany,as for the brake lights, the computer probably picked up a bad code, take it to a shop that can delete the code

It's either your vehicle speed sensor or the wiring to the sensor it tells the computers for the engine and anti lock brakes how fast you are going. The sensors do fail quite often on high mileage cars. The sensor is on the side of the transmission near the drive shaft if your truck is two wheel drive. or on the transfer case if your truck is four wheel drive.
