Default The number one rule when negotiating a new car deal

Creating competition among car dealers is by far the most important thing you can do when negotiating. If you fail to do this you don’t stand a chance! It feels extremely good to watch the car salesmen cry in your rearview mirror as you drive away with your brand new car!The second thing that you have to do is research everything that they say. You will soon realize how often they are lying to you!

Happy Negotiating

Try to get the dealer to offer you a price first before you suggest what you are thinking of a price. I don't know if this is the main thing you should do but keep it in mind anyway when you are negotiating.

What I have found in the past few years is the Dealership comes to control the customer! The customer needs to be in control of the entire deal.

Example:

I bought a new car for my wife this past Feb and controlled the deal!

We went to the Hyundai Dealership looking for a "Tuscon". Knowing what you want to purchase is one part of making a deal that you conrol. (in my opinion)

Go late at night, and in the worst weather possible. If you take your trade-in with you, it will look better in the dark.

Go to the dealership at the end of the month. Many 'spiffs'....(bonuses) are offered to the sales staff to raise the number of cars sold. This is universal, especially if sales are not living up to expectations of Management.

I found a car that I was quite enamored with and was a car that my wife fell in love with. Always wear a dour expression, and never let them see that you have found a car that excites you'

I told the salesman what I wanted out of my used trade-in. This always turns out to be a fail, because they will almost never give you the trade-in $$$ that you want. Have the salesman write down figures that he will trade with.
GET A COPY OF THE NUMBERS, as this will allow you to negotiate thoroughly
Once you get a copy of the numbers, give the salesman your phone number, and you tell him that when he will give you a deal that you can live with, you will come back.

This is when you leave the dealership!

call the sales manager the next day, and begin your negotiaton. If you play your cards correctly, they are most likely to increase your trade in to make you deal

Google the model that you are looking at and come up with some negative crap about this specific model.
YOU are in comtrol of the negotiatons at this point. Do not go to the dealership!

If you are steadfast this is the only $$$ that you will trade for and If they come down on their price or give you more for your trade-in, you will most likely be on your way to making a deal.

One more thing! never go to the Finance office to be browbeat by the "Finance Manager".f you make a deal, only allow yourself to close the paperwork in the salesmans office and not in another place where you lose control
