Default Do you have to tell you insurance if you add a K&N air filter? (does it count as a modification?)?

Ok my insurance premium is like huge!! and i doubt i can afford it increasing but i really want to increase my cars preformance so i was thinking of putting a K&N air filter in but my brother thinks that it counts as a modification and if i dont tell the insurance company, the insurance could become void! can anyone clear this up for me?

Another question has anyone had experiance with one of these products and know if the really work(and if you have to tell the insurance company aswell )

thanks

OK, the air filter does not count as a modification. It can be passed off as routine maintenance. As for the item on ebay...I have to tell you that this is the biggest scam on ebay. If you really want to try it, go to radio shack and buy a ceramic resistor, it's the same exact thing and it only costs like 30 cents. They claim to give you 20hp, but in all reality, they make you THINK you've gained 20hp. They do nothing at all.

I do not believe it counts as a modification. All you are doing is replacing a filter, it's considered maintenance, not modification. I have one in my 99 Dodge Ram, and it did give me a bit more power and tourque. I did not tell the insurance company, and had no problems in my last accident.

I put a K&N on my old truck. It doesn't count as a modification if it is just the filter. I never told the insurance company and have never heard of anyone telling insurnace for any modification unless they were trying to get special collector car insurance for a highly modified. My truck was in an accident and was fixed and neither my insurance nor the other guys insurance (who paid the claim) ever mentioned it. In my life I have been involved in about 7 car accidents 2 were major requiring big repairs and I have never seen a claims adjuster ever look inside the car or under the hood. One of the major ones was with my truck with the K&N.
Even if you did an extreme modification the insurance company would have to prove that the mod directly caused the accident to be able to disallow the claim. Even then they would try to go after the part manufacturers.
If you tried to make a comprehensive claim because someone stole the filter or damaged the car they will probably just paid to replace with whatever is cheapest.
The K&N filter did seem to slightly improve gas mileage (maybe 1-2 mpg) and Hp. At the time of the accident my truck also had, splitfire triple platinum plugs, upgraded plug wires, modified throttle linkage, high performance non-manufacturer recommended car tires, modified exhaust, aftermarket stereo these had no affect on the accident or insurance.

I guess laws are different down there but my insurance company has never asked me about modifications. But no a k&n is not a mod its just a air filter.

As for the ebay thing. Thats just funny. It doesnt even explain how it works. I'm assuming what its supposed to do is go in line between the coolant temperature sensor and the computer. It confuses the computer and it thinks the engine is running to cold so it adds more fuel to try to heat the engine up to proper operating temps. In theory it works. Not for all cars though and not all the time. I'm going ot be doing something similar to one of my cars when I boost the turbo up to really stupid levels as engines need a proper ratio or air and fuel at all times.

Go to some honda forums and boards and read and read and read. The net is a vast source of model specific car knowledge.

first off your two links to mods, are worthless, wont do a darn thing for ya,in fact the k&n filter alone will deliver better performance/savings than the other 2 together.second, the k&n does not count as a modification that would bother your insurance, also it cannot void your vehicle warranty if it still has one. the k&n company has designed the filter as a high performance alternative to a factory replacement.and as such it does everything that the factory part does, just better.its already been through court, and the verdict was in favor of k&n. so go ahead an by the k&n. you can also consider platinum type spark plugs, performance plug wires, and even some exhaust modifications, none of which are necessary to report to the ins company
