Default 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage - intermittant problem?

My 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage gas an intermittant starting/drivability problem. Most days it runs fine. Some days it will be difficult to start (sputters and dies unless I hold the gas pedal down). On these days, the car will hesitate and lack power, especially when cold. The problem clears up somewhat after a few minutes but on these days, the car will still lack power and will be difficult to drive up the slightest hill without downshifting. The next day, the car may run great again. It seems as though the car isn't getting enough fuel or something. If it was carbureted, I would think that the choke wasn't functioning properly. Maybe it is a problem with whatever electronic gizmo enriches the fuel mixture when the car is cold? Hhowever, since the problem doesn't completely clear up (only improves) when the car warms up, I'm a little stumped. Thanks for any ideas. The car has 120k miles.
