Default difference between 4x4 and 4x2?

I was under the impression that 4x2 was a 2 wheel drive that you could switch into 4 wheel drive.. now im told that its just strictly a 2wd vehicle.

which is it?

4x2 is a two wheel drive when that moniker came about they had a little better ground clearance than a standard 2wd

Yes, a 4X2 is only 2 wheel drive (4 wheels by 2 wheel drive) a 4X4 is (4 wheels by 4 wheel drive) And then there is AWD (all wheel drive)

4x4 is 4 wheel drive 4x2 is 2 wheel drive which means only two wheels accelerate and move the car.
