...its spitting and staling.. plz read! i had a mechanic change the headers for me on the jeep last week or so.... and since then it has been acting up....
when you start it cold in the morning or when ever it takes FOREVER to start.. so i change the distributor,cap,spark plugs and wires... nothgin happend... 6 months ago i changed the map sensor and starter on it... so there brand new... when you start it in the morning its ok and doesnt shake or spitt.. but if i drive from home to a gas station and turn off the car and turn it back on... it give a RIDICULIOUS shaking... it feels like a hose or sumthing is loose and is sucking in air.... and it shuts off... and wont turn on until i guess it cools or sumthing???? it takes for ever to turn on.. i tap the gass and turn it on and it keeps spinning, strugling to turn on.... oh and what ever is going on...its making the car get BAD gas mileage.... please email me and tell me what you think... i would really appriciate it beacuase i have only 1 car and i am a student. |

Is it any "check engine" light coming on? If not then trouble codes are of little use. Sometimes a sensor can go bad but not completely and still cause the vehicle to run crappy and still not send a signal to the PCM to light up the "check engine" light. Even though you changed the MAP sensor do not rule it out, cause it does sound like the O2 sensor, TPS(Throttle Position Sensor), or the MAP sensor to me. My Jeep I have did not have a check engine light come on and it turned out the reason it ran poorly was the MAP sensor. About 2 months after I replaced it the "check engine" light came on with the trouble code of 52. As the previous person said that indicated the O2 sensor but turned out being the MAP sensor the O2 was good and doing it's job of telling me the engine was running rich. The rich running was caused by the MAP sensor though. Anyway the light would not stay on constantly and the Jeep ran fine in the mornings but rough in the evenings. I was told by a certified mechanic that the MAP sensor can adjust under the outside temperature and humidity with humidity being the major factor. On rainy days the light never came on at all.
Also, turn the key on and let it build up pressure in the injectors before trying to start it, maybe the pump is leaking off when it sits for a while. Try changing the fuel filter and maybe have the fuel pressure checked as well. Dirty injectors could be an issue, try getting some injector cleaner or SeaFoam(miracle working car juice). If injectors are dirty they may need professional cleaning. Sounds more like a fuel delivery issue than anything else though. Which can cause very poor gas mileage. If you do turn on key and let pump build up pressure and it starts right up, then you know it is a fuel delivery issue. May need a new fuel pump, yours may not be pumping enough fuel. If you suspect a vacuum hose is lose, cracked or disconnected take a little piece of hose about 10" in length and while your jeep is running put one end to your ear and the other pass over the vacuum lines on the jeep. You will hear a whistle sound or hiss if there is a problem there, just be careful not to get around the pulleys and fan. |

You say the exhaust manifolds were changed. And were the old oxygen sensors unscrewed from the old manifolds and installed on the new manifolds? The oxygen sensor is the most important thing that controls a modern fuel injected engine. From the sounds of it, you should have had the yellow check engine light come on on your dash. If you didn't, the bulb may be burned out. So the very first thing for you to do is read your computer error codes out. You have an OBD-I emissions system. All 1996 and newer vehicles had the OBD-II system. So you can read the codes out manually yourself and then look up the sensors that are showing a fault. I'm sure your oxygen sensors will have an error code (codes 51 and 52), but that doesn't mean they're bad as explained in the articles below. It's possible you have a late model 95 with the newer OBD-II emissions system, in which case you can get an http://www.autozone.com auto store to read out the codes for you.
